"Habitat / Range Bogs, marshes and streambanks in the lowland and montane zones; rare in coastal BC; N to AK, E to MB and S to NM and CA, disjunct in IA." [IFBC-E-flora]

Status: Native [E-flora]

Montia dichotoma - dwarf montia

"General: Annual herb from a fibrous root; stems ascending to erect, 1- to several, branching from the base, 2-5 (8) cm tall." [IFBC-E-flora]

"Habitat / Range Moist seepage sites in the lowland zone; infrequent on SE Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, infrequent in SC BC; S to ID, MT and CA." [IFBC-E-flora]

Montia fontana - blinks

"Montia fontana is a ANNUAL/PERENNIAL growing to 0.5 m (1ft 8in). It is not frost tender. It is in flower from May to October, and the seeds ripen from June to October. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects, Cleistogomy (self-pollinating without flowers ever opening). The plant is self-fertile. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist or wet soil and can grow in water." [PFAF]

"General: Annual herb from a slender taproot; stems decumbent to ascending, several, freely branching but tending to root at the nodes and so may persist from 1 year to the next, 3-20 cm long." [IFBC-E-flora]

"Notes: Recognition of infraspecific taxa within this variable species complex does not appear warranted at this time (McNeill 1975)." [IFBC-E-flora]

"Habitat / Range Wet meadows or shallow water in the lowland and montane zones; infrequent in NW and SW, rare in SC BC; circumpolar, N to AK, YT and NT, E to NF and S to ME, ID, NV and CA; Greenland, Iceland, Eurasia." [IFBC-E-flora]

Status: Native [E-flora]

Edible Uses

Cultivation & Propagation

"Prefers a moist peaty soil. A polymorphic species[17]." [PFAF]

"Seed - sow spring or autumn in situ. The seed usually germinates rapidly." [PFAF]

Montia linearis - narrow-leaved montia

"General: Annual herb from a fibrous root; stems ascending to erect, usually solitary but sometimes several, branched or unbranched, 5-20 cm tall." [IFBC-E-flora]

Montia parvifolia - small-leaved montia

Subtaxa Present in B.C.

"General: Perennial herb from slender rhizomes and stolons, sometimes forming large patches; stems ascending to erect, solitary to several, simple from the nodes of the rhizomes, 10-25 cm tall; vegetative stoloniferous branches up to 40 cm long." [IFBC-E-flora]

"Notes: Two intergrading taxa occur in BC:" [IFBC-E-flora]

"Habitat / Range Moist mossy rock outcrops, streambanks and shorelines in the lowland and montane zones; frequent in S BC; N to SE AK and SW YT, E to MB and S to MT, ID, UT and CA." [IFBC-E-flora]

"Ecological Indicator Information A shade intolerant, submontane to montane, Western North American forb distributed equally in the Pacific and Cordilleran regions. Occurs in cool temperate and cool mesothermal climates on nitrogenmedium soils; its occurrence decreases with increasing latitude and elevation. Scattered in open-canopy forests on water-shedding and water-receiving sites. Usually inhabits very shallow, friable organic materials accumulated on stony and rocky sites affected by temporary surface flow of water and organic materials. Characteristic of colluvial sites."
